8 photographs of the Champlain Society at Mount Desert Island, Me. in 1880. Founded by Charles Eliot and various classmates from Harvard College, the Champlain Society camped on Mount Desert Island, Me. during the summers of 1880-1882 to pursue amateur scientific work in the study of natural history. The images depict views of Mount Desert Island and Somes Sound, Me.; the Champlain Society's tent-site on the Sound; and various members of the Society, including Charles Eliot and his brother, Samuel A. (Samuel Atkins) Eliot. The photographs were taken by Marshall Perry Slade and are identified in the hand of Samuel A. (Samuel Atkins) Eliot; both were members of the Society. All of the photographs are paper-based.

Landscape architect. Educated at Harvard College (A.B. 1882). Eliot was instrumental in the development of the Boston Metropolitan Park system. Later, his ideas set the pattern for most American metropolitan parks. In 1892, Eliot was hired as landscape architect by the new Metropolitan Park Commission, which he had been instrumental in creating.
